Bitbucket is a popular web-based platform for hosting Git repositories. It allows developers to collaborate on projects and manage their code effectively. Forking a repository in Bitbucket is a common practice, as it allows you to create a separate copy of a repository in your own account for further modifications.
But what if you no longer need a forked repository in Bitbucket? Well, deleting it is a straightforward process that can be done in a few simple steps.
To delete a forked repository in Bitbucket, you need to navigate to the repository’s main page. Once there, click on the “Settings” tab, which can be found in the navigation menu on the left side of the screen. In the settings menu, scroll down until you find the “Delete repository” section.
Before deleting a forked repository, it is important to note that this action cannot be undone. Once you delete a repository, all its data and history will be permanently removed. Make sure to back up any important information before proceeding with the deletion.
Step 1: Access the Forked Repository
To delete a forked repository in Bitbucket, you first need to access the repository. Here are the steps to do it:

Step 3: Delete the Forked Repository

To delete a forked repository in Bitbucket:
- Navigate to the main page of your Bitbucket account.
- Click on the “Repositories” tab in the sidebar.
- Locate the forked repository you want to delete and click on its name to open it.
- Click on the “Settings” button in the top-right corner of the repository page.
- In the left sidebar, click on the “Delete repository” option.

Step 4: Confirm the Deletion
Once you have selected the repository you want to delete, you will be taken to the repository’s “Settings” page.
In this page, scroll down until you find the “Danger Zone” section.
Delete this Repository
Under the “Danger Zone” section, you will see the option to delete the repository.
Important: Deleting a repository is permanent and cannot be undone. Make sure you have selected the correct repository before proceeding with the deletion.
To confirm the deletion, you will need to enter the name of the repository you want to delete in the text field provided.
Once you have entered the repository name, click on the “Delete Repository” button.
Note: Deleting a forked repository will not affect the original repository or any other forks that may exist.
Step 5: Verify the Deletion
Once you have confirmed the deletion of your forked repository, it is important to verify that it has been successfully removed from Bitbucket. Follow these steps to make sure the deletion process was successful:
1. Access your Bitbucket account
Open your web browser and go to the Bitbucket website. Sign in to your account using your username and password.
2. Navigate to the original repository
In the Bitbucket dashboard, locate the original repository from which you forked. Click on its name to access the repository’s overview page.
3. Check for the forked repository
On the repository overview page, look for the list of forks. This list contains all the repositories that have been forked from the original repository.
If you no longer see your forked repository in the list, congratulations! The deletion process was successful and your forked repository has been completely removed from Bitbucket.
If you still see your forked repository in the list, it is possible that the deletion process was not completed correctly. Double-check the steps you followed in the previous sections, and try deleting the repository again.
